SSDI Eligibility Requirements

SSDI is available on a temporary or permanent basis, depending on the nature of the recipient’s medical condition. SSDI is not contingent on satisfying any financial requirements. Rather, in order to for a person to qualify for SSDI benefits, he or she must:

  • Must have a physical or mental medical condition that prevents him or her from engaging in “substantial gainful activity” and is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. SSDI does not cover applicants with medical conditions that are partial or short-term disabilities expected to last less than one year.
  • Be under the age of 65.
  • Have earned enough “work credits” while employed. The number of work “credits” required to receive SSDI varies depending on the age of the applicant at the time the disabling medical condition was incurred. For more information, the calculation of work credits, visit here.
