A recent study shows that the use of certain hair straightening products may cause consumers to be more susceptible to uterine cancer. The study was conducted over 11 years, with more than 33,000 female participants. The results show that women who use chemical hair straighteners more than four times a year have an increased risk of developing uterine cancer.

How Do Hair Products Cause Uterine Cancer?

The newly released study indicates that hair straightening products may cause uterine cancer due to the harmful chemicals they contain. For example, shampoos that cause cancer contain DI-2-Ethylhextphthalate, or DEHP, a highly toxic carcinogen. Using these haircare products may expose you to phthalates and toxins that disrupt the endocrine system. The endocrine system comprises a network of glands and body organs that produce and store hormones. A healthy endocrine system ensures your body develops and functions normally throughout your life.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals, such as DEHP, found in cancer-causing haircare products, inhibit the way your body’s hormones work with devastating consequences. This disruption is linked to adverse health problems, including diabetes, heart diseases, impaired immune function, poor sexual health, and uterine cancers.

What Hair Products Are Causing Cancer?

Hair straightening products from five cosmetic lines have been named in a recent federal lawsuit in Chicago. The plaintiff alleges that she developed uterine cancers after exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals following consistent use of the product. This plaintiff linked hair care products from L’Oréal USA Products Inc., L’Oréal USA Inc. Soft Sheen Carson (WI), Strength of Nature Global LLC, Dabur USA Inc, and Dabur International Ltd to her cancer diagnosis.

Research shows hair straightening products double the risk of consumers developing uterine cancer. However, scientists found no association between other hair care products for women, including bleach, hair dyes, perms, and highlights, with uterine cancer. Notably, the research found that women of color are more susceptible to uterine cancer because they’re prolific users of chemical hair straightening products.

Can You File a Lawsuit if Your Hair Products Are Causing Cancer?
